Chapter 11, Problem 1A
Summary Introduction

Introduction

Yes, because there are millions of bacteria exist on the earth, only 5,000 bacterial species were identified by microbiologists. Therefore 3,000 species have been listed in Bergey’s manual. Using conventional growth medium to the entire bacterial community cannot be cultivated.  It is a great deal for microbiologists to identify and grow new bacterial species using new tools and techniques. Therefore scientist still need to attempt to grow more new bacterial species.

Microbiomes can be characterized using a number of molecular biology approaches. Which approach would provide a better functional description of a community: metagenomic or metatranscriptomic sequencing? Briefly explain your reasoning.
You have recently been hired as a researcher in a premier university. Your research deals with isolating novel antibiotics from Streptomyces species to offer solution in the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. Unfortunately, late one night you did not label the tubes and plates clearly. Now your promising work needs to be resolved with only a few of information retained. Gladly, you found the results in your notebook. Unfortunately, they are not labeled either. These graphs represent percentage of survival of bacteria after treatment with the antibiotics. Samples with antibiotic added (black bars); controls with no antibiotic added (grey bars). You need to identify which antibiotic was used per set-up (see figure). Listed below are some essential information. Antibiotic A: 0.5 kDa protein, targets peptidoglycanAntibiotic B: 20 kDa protein, targets peptidoglycanAntibiotic C: Cationic antimicrobial peptideAntibiotic D: Targets lipopolysaccharide Staphylococcus aureus: gram-positive…
An example of bioremediation is     A) the use of prokaryotes to treat sewage or clean up oil spills.     B) the production of antibiotics by cultured prokaryotes.     C) the application of bacteria to produce transgenic plants.
