Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The multiplicity and parity of one of the excited state configuration of ${\text{C}}_{\text{2}}$ are to be stated.

Concept introduction:

Electrons can be excited from one energy level to another.  This shift of electrons is known as electronic spectra.  Multiplicity is defined as the number of possible states for a given spin and angular momentum.  The multiplicity is given by the equation as shown below.

The behavior of centrosymmetric molecules under inversion is given by parity.  The orbitals that remain unchanged on inversion are called gerade and those that change are called ungerade.  The overall parity of a molecule is given by the equations as shown below.
