Concept explainers
Metric prefixes are also used for computers. A byte is the amount of computer memory needed to store one alphanumeric character. In reference to computers you may hear the following words: kilobytes, megabytes, and gigabytes. Use the following chart to convert the measurements in exercises 70–73.
1 gigabyte (GB) = one billion bytes = 1,000,000,000 bytes |
1 megabyte (MB) = one million bytes* = 1,000,000 bytes |
1 kilobyte (KB) = one thousand bytes† = 1,000 bytes |
* Sometimes in computer science 1 megabyte is considered to be 1,048,576 bytes. |
†Sometimes in computer science 1 kilobyte is considered to be 1024 bytes. |

- he I, Mr.Gumpert, want to become famous. I want my dog Aria to be famous too. This is what I am going to do: • I am going to create a new unit of measurement for length called gumps (gp) and • another unit of measurement for volume called arias (ar) So that people can become accustomed to these new units I have included conversion factors for the soon to be obsolete metric & imperial systems here. 1gp = 5.896ft = 1.797m 1kgp = 1.117 miles = 1.797km Part A: Core Understanding A1 Perform the following unit conversions, rounding to two decimal places.
