During oxidative stress, the antioxidant mechanisms are overactive; reactive oxygen species increase, which may lead to the damage of cells. Damage results mainly from enzyme inactivation and the polysaccharide depolymerization as well as due to membrane destruction and DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) breakage.
