Concept explainers
To determine: The order in which the lipids will elute from a mixture of phosphatidylserine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, cholesteryl palmitate, sphingomyelin, palmitate, n-tetradecanol, triacylglycerol, and cholesterol, during silica gel column chromatographic separation.
Introduction:
Silica gel column chromatography is a technique for the separation and purification of compounds. In this technique the mobile is a liquid and the stationary phase is a solid that is ‘silica gel’. The separation of the compounds depends on the polarity of the solvent and the activity of adsorbents. The lipids can be separated by the silica gel column chromatography.
