Concept explainers
The images of trees in Figure P1.68 come from a catalog advertising fast-growing trees. If we mark the position of the top of the tree in the successive years, as shown in the graph in the figure, we obtain a motion diagram much like ones we have seen for other kinds of motion. The motion isn't steady, of course. In some months the tree grows rapidly; in other months, quite slowly. We can see, though, that the average speed of growth is fairly constant for the first few years.

70. At the end of year 3, a rope is tied to the very top of the tree to steady it. This rope is staked into the ground 15 feet away from the tree. What angle does the rope make with the ground?

- B. 60°
- C. 30°
- D. 27°

What is this speed in m/s?A. 9 x 10-8 m/s B. 3 x 10-9 m/sC. 5 x 10-6 m/s D. 2 x 10-6 m/sarrow_forwardThe velocity of a rat traveling on a straight line is v(s)=1/(s+1), where the velocity is in meters per second and s is in meters. the rat travels 10 meters from s=0 to s=10m. Assume s=0 when t=0. 1. The total time it took for the rat to reach s=10m is ____s. 2. The expression for the position as a function of time is s(t)=_____. 3. The absolute maximum (maximum of absolute values) acceleration of the rat during the 10-meter trip is ____ m/s^2. Please help solve these questions, the solutions are given below I'm just not sure how to solve it. (Use paper sheet ,Not Typewritten) The solutions are: 1) 110 2)(sqrt(t+0.25))-0.5 3)1.00arrow_forwardTo get to his office from home, Greg walks 5 blocks north and then 2 blocks east. After work he meets some friends at a cafe; to get there he walks 3 blocks south and 6 blocks west. All blocks are 660 feet long. What is the straight-line distance from the cafe to his home? Express your answer in feet.arrow_forward
- A car is traveling at 30 m/s ( approximately 67 mph) on I-95 highway. The driver applies the brakes and the car comes to a stop in 4.0 s . What is the car's acceleration, in m/s2? Your answer needs to have 2 significant figures, including the negative sign in your answer if needed.arrow_forwardA driver traveling north slows down from 35.4m / s to 0m / s in 8.6 seconds. What is the magnitude of the driver's acceleration? The standard units for acceleration are "meters per second-squared" or "meters per second per second" and it's written as m / (s ^ 2) or m / s / sarrow_forwardYou are driving 65.0 miles/hour and you see a police car, so you slow down to 42.5 miles/hour. It takes you 3 seconds to do this. What is your deceleration? (I asked this one before, but someone plugged in -22.5 miles/hr x 2.237 m/s / 1 mile an hour which I didn't understand)arrow_forward
- As you are driving to school one day, you pass a construction site of a new building and you stop to watch for a few minutes. A crane is lifting a batch of bricks on a pallet to an upper floor of the building. Suddenly a brick falls off the rising pallet. You measure the time it takes for the brick to hit the ground and you find it to be 2.5 seconds. The crane has height markings. You saw the brick fell off the pallet at a height of 30.7 meters above the ground. A falling brick can be dangerous, and you wonder how fast the brick was moving when it hit the ground. Since you are taking physics, you quickly calculate the answer.arrow_forward1d. A student stands at the edge of a cliff and throws a stone horizontally over the edge with a speed of v0 = 18.5 m/s. The cliff is h = 20.0 m above a flat, horizontal beach as shown in the figure. Write the equations for the position of the stone with time, using the coordinates in the figure. (Use the following as necessary: t. Let the variable t be measured in seconds. Do not state units in your answer.) x= y=arrow_forwardGeorge walks to a friend’s house. - Maria throws two stones from the top edge of a building with a speed of 2.2×1012.2×101 m/s. The height of the building is 3.2×1023.2×102 meters. She throws one straight down and the other straight up. The first one hits the street in a time ?1t1. How much later is it before the second stone hits? answer in seconds.arrow_forwardA walker sees a rock fall from the top of a steep cliff and notices that it takes 1.5 seconds for the rock to fall the final third ( or 1/3) of the way. a) What is the height of the cliff in meters? b) In part (a) you get two roots to a quadratic equation and use one of them for your answer. What does the second root represent?arrow_forwardA student witnesses a flash of lightning and then t = 1.5 s later the student hears the associated clap of thunder.Sound travels at 343 m/s in the air.
