Concept explainers
A woman starts from her house and begins jogging down her street. In order to keep a record of her workout, she carries a stopwatch and records the time it takes her to reach specific landmarks such as intersections, school grounds, and churches. Since she knows the distance to each of these landmarks, she is able to tabulate the data shown here:
Time | Distance jogged |
10 min | 2.1 km |
17 min | 3.2km |
32 min | 6.5 km |
44 min | 8.6km |
Make a plot of the distance jogged versus time. Draw a test-fit me through the data, and use this line to estimate (a)the speed at which she was jogging in m/s and (b) the distance she will jog in 1 hour.

What is the speed in kilometers per hour (1 mi = 1609 m)? Report your answer as a whole number.arrow_forward
- The speed S (m/mii) of an object is defined by S = 6t² + 2t + 3 after t minutes. For the first one minute, the object travelled for 10 m. Determine how far the object travelled for the first two minutes. One boat travels south at 36 mi/hr and the other travels east at 48 mi/hr. After half an hour, how fast is the distance between the boats increasing? Let x be the distance the eastbound boat has traveled, y be the distance the southbound boat has traveled, and z be the distance between the boats. Write an equation that relates x, y, and zarrow_forward
- Danny takes his dog to the local dog park every morning, as well (dog-walking is very popular in this area). He walks with his dog 6 blocks east, 6 blocks north, and 6 west in order to get to the park. If each block is 50 meters, what distance did Danny travel in meters? Answer: marrow_forwardDaryl and Cynthia leave home at 7 am, heading in opposite directions for work. Cynthia usually spends 20 minutes biking to work while Daryl needs only 30 minutes to walk to work. Cynthia's average speed is 3 miles per hour faster than Daryl's average speed. If they work 6 miles apart, what is the average speed, in miles per hour, for each person?arrow_forwardA straight running track is 2400 m long. A runner starts from the start line of the track, runs to the end line, and immediately turns back to run back to the starting point. After running for a total of 30 minutes, the runner was able to complete one whole round trip and is now halfway through the track on his second trip towards the end line. What was the runner's average speed in m/s? Answer:arrow_forward
- A car starts moving at time t=0 and goes faster and faster. Its velocity is shown in the following table. t (seconds) 0 3 6 9 12 Velocity (ft/sec) 0 8 27 43 74 A. Estimate how far the car traveled during the first 12 seconds using the left-hand sums with 4 subdivisions. Answer: B. Now estimate how far the car traveled during the first 12 seconds using the right-hand sums with four subdivisions. Answer:arrow_forwardTo visit your friend, you first drive on a highway at 55 mi/h for 1.6 hours and then drive on a local road at 20 mi/h for 0.7 hours. What is the average velocity of your trip in mi/h to your friend's home? Your Answer: Answerarrow_forwardMario rides his motorcycle in going to school. He drives at an average speed of 30 kilometers per hour. The distance between his house and the school is 15 kilometers. Every time he sees his best friend Jessica walking on the road, he invites her for a ride and lowers his speed. On the other hand, he increases his speed when he wakes up late for school. a) If x represents the time it takes Mario to drive to school with the given distance of 15 kilometers, how will you represent the relationship of his speed (y) versus the time (x)?arrow_forward
