Chapter 1, Problem 38A
Solution

Interpretation: Mass of the given figure needs to be determined if a 2cm3 of the same material has a mass of 4.0 g.

Concept introduction: Mass is a measure of the amount of matter an object contains. It is related to density and volume as follows:

  Density=mass volume

The mass of the cube is 128 g.

Given: Lengthl=Widthw=Heighth=4 cm

Density: Density is defined as mass per unit volume.

  Density=mass volume                                ...i

After solving the above equation,

  mass=density×volume.                       ..ii

  The volume of the cube=l×w×h cm3=4×4×4 cm3=64cm3

Now, calculate density

  Density=mass volume=4g2cm3=2gcm3

Now, the mass of the cube =density×volume

  =2gcm3×64cm3

  =2×64g×cm3cm3

  =128g

Thus, the mass of the cube with sides 2 cm is 128 g.
