Concept explainers
The amount of energy E (in joules) that is released by an earthquake is given by:
where M is the magnitude of the earthquake on the Richter scale.
(a) Determine the energy that was released from the Anchorage earthquake (1964, Alaska, USA), magnitude 9.2.
(b) The energy released in Lisbon earthquake (Portugal) in 1755 was one- half the energy released in the Anchorage earthquake. Determine the magnitude of the earthquake in Lisbon on the Richter scale.

- A driver of a car stopped at a gas station to fill up his gas tank. He looked at his watch, and the time read exactly 3:40 p.m. At this time, he started pumping gas into the tank. At exactly 3:44, the tank was full and he noticed that he had pumped 10.7 gallons. What is the average rate of flow of the gasoline into the gas tank?arrow_forwardFind the intensity of light at a depth of 12 meter if I0=14 and k=0.7.
