Concept explainers
Suppose you were dissatisfied with both Celsius and Fahrenheit units and wanted to design your own temperature scale based on ethyl alcohol (ethanol). On the Celsius scale, ethanol has a melt- ing point of — 117.3oC and a boiling point of 78.5oC, but on your new scale calibrated in units of degrees ethanol, oE, you define ethanol to melt at 0oE and boil at 200oE.
(a) How does your ethanol degree compare in size with a Celsius degree?
(b) How does an ethanol degree compare in size with a Fahren- heit degree?
(c) What are the melting and boiling points of water on the etha- nol scale?
(d) What is normal human body temperature (98.6oF) on the ethanol scale?
(e) If the outside thermometer reads 130oE, how would you dress to go out?

- At 25 C, the density of water is 0.997 g/cm3, whereas the density of ice at 10 C is 0.917 g/cm3. (a) If a soft-drink can (volume = 250. mL) is filled completely with pure water at 25 C and then frozen at - 10 C, what volume does the ice occupy? (b) Can the ice be contained within the can?arrow_forward1-87 Water that contains deuterium rather than ordinary hydrogen (see Section 2-4D) is called heavy water. The specific heat of heavy water at 25oC is 4.2 17 J/g oC. Which requires more energy to raise the temperature of 10.0 g by 10oC, water or heavy water?arrow_forwardA gasoline station in Manila, Philippines, charges 38.46 pesos per liter for unleaded gasoline at a time when one U.S. dollar (USD) buys 47.15 pesos PHP). The car you are driving has a gas tank with a capacity of 14 U.S. gallons and gets 24 miles per gallon. (a) What is the cost of unleaded gasoline in Manila in USD per gallon? (b) How much would a tankful of unleaded gasoline for your car cost in USD? (c) Suppose that you have only PHP 1255 (a day’s wage for an elementary school teacher) and the car's tank is almost empty. How many miles can you expect to drive if you spend all your money on gasoline?arrow_forward
- While being driven from Philadelphia to Atlanta, a distance of about 1250 km, a 2014 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster uses 213 L gasoline.(a) What (average) fuel economy, in miles per gallon, did the Roadster get during this trip?(b) If gasoline costs $3.80 per gallon, what was the fuel cost for this trip?arrow_forwardConvert the following temperatures to degrees Celsius:(a) 77 K, the boiling point of liquid nitrogen, (b) 4.22 K,the boiling point of liquid helium, (c) 600.61 K, themelting point of lead.arrow_forwardLight travels in a vacuum at a speed of 3.00 × 108 m s-1 .(a) Convert this speed to miles per second.(b) Express this speed in furlongs per fortnight, a littleused unit of speed.
