Concept explainers
If an object is moving at a constant speed v. then the time the object takes to traverse a distance d is inversely proportional to its speed v. If it takes a car 1 h to travel a distance of 60 mi, how long will it take the car to travel the same distance if it slows down to one-third of its original speed?

- Traveling with an initial speed of 70 kph, a car accelerates at 6000 km/hr2 along a straight road. How long will ittake to reach a speed of 120 kph? Also, through what distance does the car travel during this time?arrow_forwardA car is moving at a velocity of 20 m/s. The car then accelerates uniformly at 1.8 m/s2. The car continues at the same acceleration until it reaches a velocity of 25 m/s, which is the legal speed limit. What is the distance the car travels in while accelerating?arrow_forwardYou normally drive on the freeway between San Diego and Los Angeles at an average speed of 105 km/h (65 mi/h), and the trip takes 1 h and 50 min. On a Friday afternoon, however, heavy traffic slows you down and you drive the same distance at an average speed of only 70 km/h (43 mi/h). How much longer does the trip take?arrow_forward
- A man drives his car down a straight road at 5.2 km at 40 kph at which point he minutes. What is the average velocity of the driver from the time that the car started to the time that the driver arrived at the gas station?arrow_forwardA bicyclist is finishing his repair of a flat tire when a friend rides by at 3.5 m/s. Two seconds later, the bicyclist hops on his bike and accelerates at 2.5 m/s2 until he catches his friend. (a) How much time does it take until he catches his friend?(b) How far has bicyclist traveled in this time?(c) What is his speed when he catches up?arrow_forwardA police car, traveling a constant 100 km/h, is passed by a speeder. Precisely 1.1 s after the speeder passes, the policeman steps on the accelerator. The police car acceleration is 3 m/s2. The policeman overtakes the speeder after 6s, what was the speeder’s speed?arrow_forward
- tortoise crawls the entire 1000.0 meters at a speed of 0.20 m/s. The rabbit runs the first 200.0 meters at 2.0 m/s, stops to take a nap for 1.3 hours, and awakens to finish the last 800.0 meters with an average speed of 3.0 m/s. Who wins the race and by how much time? Get to destination at the same time. Rabbit wins by 47 s Tortoise wing by 47 s O rabbit wins by 2.02 hrs Tortoise wins by2.02 hoursarrow_forwardYou normally drive on the freeway between two cities at an average speed of 30 m/s (67 mph), and the trip takes 2h and 20min. On a busy day, however, heavy traffic slows you down and you drive the same distance at an average speed of only 20 m/s (45mph) . How much longer does the trip take.arrow_forwardCheetahs can accelerate to a speed of 20.2 m/s in 2.65 s and can continue to accelerate to reach a top speed of 29.0 m/s . Assume the acceleration is constant until the top speed is reached and is zero thereafter. Let the +? direction point in the direction the cheetah runs.Express the cheetah's top speed ?top in miles per hour (mi/h) .Starting from a crouched position, how much time ?accel does it take a cheetah to reach its top speed and what distance ? does it travel in that time?arrow_forward
- A cop car, at a constant speed of 110 km/h, is overtaken by a race car. Precisely 1.2 s after the race car passes, the cops step on the accelerator. The cop's car acceleration is 4 m/s2. The cops overtake the race car after 5 s, what was the speeder’s speed?arrow_forwardIn heavy rush-hour traffic, you drive in a straight line at 12 m/s for 1.5 minutes, then you have to stop for 3.5 minutes, and finally, you drive at 15 m/s for another 2.5 minutes. Plot a position-versus-time graph for this motion. Your plot should extend from t = 0 minutes to t = 7.5 minutes. Assume x=0 and t=0 at the start of your motion.arrow_forwardStarting from rest, a bus leaves a gas station with a constant acceleration of 2 m/s˄2 until it reaches a speed of 10 m/s. The bus then continues to move with this speed (10 m/s) for 5 s. Then the bus decelerates at 2.5 m/s˄2 until it stops. What is the total distance traveled by the bus? Illustrate the given first.arrow_forward
