Question

Your father, age 74, has been recovering in a rehabilitation center from a hip fracture. He has developed C. diff and is in isolation. Explain the process of how this disease occurs. What preventive measures need to be taken to prevent the spread of this condition?

Expert Solution
Step 1

C. diff or Clostridioides difficile refers to the infection of the colon that leads to severe diarrhea and inflammation of the colon part of the large intestine. The infection caused by Clostridioides difficile is characterized by diarrhea, fever, anorexia, nausea, and stomach pain.

Step 2

The Clostridioides difficile infection occurs of the spores of the Clostridioides difficile bacterium. These spores of the bacterium are transferred into the feces of the infected person and the contaminated food and due to ineffective handwashing practices. The following are the preventive measures that are needed to be taken to prevent the spread of this condition:

  1. Frequent, adequate, and effective handwashing before and after eating and after using the toilet.
  2. Wearing slippers and not walking barefoot.
  3. Covering the food adequately.
  4. Eating fresh and healthy food.
  5. Open defecation should be avoided.
