Introduction
Diffusion-limited reactions are reactions where the rate of the reaction is solely dependent upon the diffusion of reactants through the reaction medium.
When a diffusion-limited enzyme catalyzes a reaction, the catalyzes is so efficient that the rate of diffusion of the substrate into the active site, or the rate of diffusion of product from the active site, becomes the rate-limiting step. This phenomenon is called catalytic perfection.
During glycolysis, isomerization of dihydroxyacetone phosphate to and from D-glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate is catalyzed by triose phosphate isomerase.
