The Romans conquered Greece and wanted the games to honor all of their many gods. A major earthquake destroyed the area, and the Greeks believed it was a divine sign opposing continuation of the sporting events. The Roman Empire converted to Christianity and would not tolerate ceremonies honoring another god.
