Question
**Question:**

Which of the following statements is *false* regarding phagocytosis?

- ○ It can ingest large particles.
- ○ It is mediated by clathrin at the plasma membrane.
- ○ All of the answers are true.
- ○ It is used by macrophages and neutrophils to ingest bacteria.
- ○ It is used by amoebae to ingest food.

**Explanation:**

This question focuses on understanding phagocytosis, a vital cellular process involved in the immune response and nutrient uptake. The statements address key aspects of phagocytosis, including its function, cellular mechanisms, and biological relevance in different organisms. The correct answer would identify the misconception about clathrin involvement in phagocytosis, as clathrin-mediated endocytosis is generally associated with smaller vesicle formation, rather than phagocytosis, which involves larger particles.

Introduction

Phagocytosis is the mechanism by which a cell uses its plasma membrane to engulf a large particle (0.5 m), resulting in the formation of an internal compartment known as the phagosome. Endocytosis is one form of endocytosis. A phagocyte is a cell that conducts phagocytosis. Phagocytosis is a key process in a multicellular organism's immune system for removing pathogens and cell debris. It includes macrophages, neutrophils, dendritic cells, monocytes, and eosinophils.

The steps involved in phagocytosis are:

  1. Chemotaxis - movement in response to chemical stimulus - pseudopods shift toward infected microorganisms.
  2. Adhesion: Attachment to a microbe is referred to as adhesion.
  3. Ingestion: During this,  the pathogen is engulfed by the pseudopodia and put in a vesicle (phagosome) containing lysozyme.
  4. Digestion: phagosome maturation occurs and lysozymes combine to form phagolysosome - microbes are normally killed at this stage.
  5. Exocytosis: It is the process by which phagocytes remove any residual microbes.
