What is set-point theory?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Set-point theory-

According to set point theory, the human body tries to stay within a certain weight range. Many people maintain a rather low body weight range throughout their adult lives. Many humans return to a certain weight range, according to researchers, although weight studies are difficult to do.

Step 2

In terms of human body weight, set point theory states that humans have a biological control system that actively controls weight towards a predetermined set weight for each individual.  This can be accomplished by regulating energy intake (e.g., by increasing or decreasing appetite) or by increasing or decreasing energy expenditure (e.g. via reduced metabolism or feelings of lethargy).  Set point theory explains why dieters find it difficult to maintain weight loss over time, as calorie restriction may become less effective or more difficult to maintain as the body's regulatory mechanisms actively push the body back towards the set point weight.

The set point theory can be used to adjust weight both downward and upward.   Even after accounting for lower energy needs after weight loss, this return to pre-change weight occurs faster than would be expected if individuals just returned to their normal caloric intake and energy expenditure, indicating an active response by the body encouraging weight gain. While the set point applies to both weight loss and weight gain deviations, the set point response driving a person to regain weight to regain the set point is stronger than the set point response driving a person to lose weight after gaining weight above the set point, implying that gaining weight is easier than losing weight.
