Question
What determines the sequence of nucleotides in the mRNA strand?
Expert Solution
Step 1

The process of converting the genetic information in the mRNA or messenger RNA into a protein is called translation. During translation, the mRNA attaches itself to the ribosome. The ribosomal RNA or the rRNA ensures the binding of the mRNA with the transfer RNA or the tRNA such that appropriate amino acid is attached to the growing polypeptide chain. The tRNA carries anticodons which are complementary to the mRNA codons and each of the tRNA attaches itself to an appropriate amino acid according to the anticodon and brings it to the mRNA to be attached to the complementary codon on the mRNA. Peptide bonds are formed between the existing amino acid and the newly brought in amino acid thereby resulting in the elongation of the polypeptide chain.
