After spain, France, England and Portugal also started arriving in the American lands and started establishing their colonies. The first English colony was settled in Jamestown, Virginia. On December 20, 1606, around 100 members of the Virginia Company sailed across the Atlantic. They reached the Chesapeake Bay in April 1607. Those people established the first settlement on an island and named it after their monarch James I.
