The maximum flow rate of a standard shower head is
about 3.5 gpm (13.3 L/min) and can be reduced to 2.75 gpm
(10.5 L/min) by switching to a low-flow shower head that is
equipped with flow controllers. Consider a family of four,
with each person taking a 6-minute shower every morning. City water at 15°C is heated to 55°C in an oil water heater
whose efficiency is 65 percent and then tempered to 42°C by
cold water at the T-elbow of the shower before being routed
to the shower head. The price of heating oil is $2.80/gal and
its heating value is 146,300 kJ/gal. Assuming a constant specific
heat of 4.18 kJ/kg∙°C for water, determine the amount
of oil and money saved per year by replacing the standard
shower heads by the low-flow ones.

- QUESTION 1 Compute the resulting pressure in kPa after a "real" diffuser in which the energy loss due to sudden enlargement is considered for the flow of water at 25°C from a 36 mm OD x 2.0 mm wall copper tube to an 85 mm OD x 2.5 mm wall copper tube, the pipes are the same elevation. The volume flow rate is 150 L/min and the pressure before the enlargement is 501.448 kPa.arrow_forwardDetermine the energy loss due to a sudden enlargement from a standard DN 25 Schedule 80 steel pipe to a DN 90 mm Schedule 80 steel pipe when the rate of flow is 3 x 10-3 m³/s.arrow_forwardFor a given HVAC water piping system, a pressure of 67 ft of head is required to produce 44 GPM water flow. How much pressure in ft will be required to flow 64 GPM?arrow_forward
- For what velocity of flow of water in a new, clean 6-inch schedule 40 steel pipe would an energy loss of 20 feet of head occur over a length of 1,000 ft? Compute the volume flow rate at that velocity. Then refigure the velocity using the design value of Ch for steel pipe.arrow_forwardAir flows through the main duct of this system at a rate of 220 cubic feet perminute (cu ft/min). In one of the branches, the rate is 96 cu ft/min. Find incubic feet per minute the rate that the air flows through the other branch.arrow_forward
