The CpG island methylator phenotype, microsatellite instability, and chromosomal instability (CIN) pathways are three different routes involved in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer. The CIN route, which is characterised by extensive chromosomal number abnormalities (aneuploidy) and loss of heterozygosity, is where the majority of instances of colorectal cancer develop. Although the total gene complement underlying CIN is still not fully understood, it can be caused by problems with chromosomal segregation, telomere stability, and the DNA damage response.
