SOURCE: Revisiting Immigration
Sacco and Vanzetti
To many Americans, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, shown here in court in 1921, represented the dangers posed by such unrestricted
immigration. Italians and avowed anarchists, a shoemaker and a fishmonger respectively, they were arrested in May 1920 and charged with robbing
a payroll delivery and murdering the guard in South Braintree, Massachusetts. Tried at the height of the postwar "Red Scare," their anarchist ideas
were proved more decisively than any connection to the crime with which they were charged, but the jury convicted them. Despite six years of legal
appeals and protests by the Italian-American community and such distinguished liberals as Felix Frankfurter, Albert Einstein, and George Bernard
Shaw, they were executed in August 1927, largely for the crime of being immigrants and anarchists.
