1. In your own words, answer the following: what is history? 2. What role do facts play in the subject of history? 3. What role does the historian play in history? 4. Can history be completely objective? 5. Another critical aspect in the study of history is the analysis of different types of sources. What are the benefits of: a) primary sources b) secondary sources. How are both sources also problematic? 5. Historiography is the study of different interpretations of history. Read the chart below and identify which "“school" of history you believe to be the most plausible: Historian/School of Theory History Great Individuals Theory: Great Individuals determine the course of history Great Man Theory of history Determinism: Ideas and forces shape history (eg. American Revolution and democracy) • History as dialectic For every old idea, there is a new one that conflicts with it The Dialectic: (thesis, antithesis) New ideas are created out of this conflict (synthesis) History is the product of this conflict • History as a product of class struggle Conflict between old ruling class and newer labour class The Marxist Dialectic: Radical School of History • History written by the victors for the benefit of the rulers/ruling class • History as 'myth-making' or propaganda Geographic Determinism: History determined by geography Critical Theory Approaches history from the belief that all history is the history of oppressors and the oppressed (Marxist) Does not approach history objectively or neutrally; critiques history to challenge existing power structures in order to change society
