Question
Engine Emission Tests
Suppose, you are working in a car manufacturing company "XYZ" in USA and as professional
you are responsible for developing diesel engines. For years your group has been fine tuning
the design of the engines and developing better and better programs to increase the gas mileage
(the number of miles that a vehicle can travel consuming specific fuel amount) of the engine.
Then USA passes a law that limits the gas emission of the cars. Upon analysis you find out that
your diesel engine design exceeds the permitted level of gas emissions.
Your manager has given instructions to add a controller to the car so that when the car is being
tested, the controller notifies the engine to go into a safety mode that is when the engine runs
below normal power, but under allowable level of gas emissions. He insists having this
controller in all cars would decrease gas emissions when the cars are being under test
conditions.
On the other hand, the controller exits the engine from the test mode when the car is on the
road and engine is running normally, which takes the gas emissions above the US-specified
gas emission levels.
So, by using these controllers your cars would pass the emission tests without decreasing the
gas consumption level.
