Genetic material is the hereditary material that is passed from the parents to the offspring. Genetic traits are passed down through the genetic material. The most common genetic material is DNA but in some viruses, RNA is also used as a genetic material. Mostly DNA is located in the nucleus of the cell but it is also possible to find in the mitochondria. The genetic material contains information about all of the cell's functions and structures. Genetic material is nothing but nucleotides. They are made up of nucleic acids.. Each nucleotide contains a sugar molecule, a base, and a phosphate group.
