Question

Predict the stronger acid in each pairH2C2O4 or HC2O4 -

Expert Solution
Step 1

H2C2O4 and HC2O4- are acidic in nature.

Step 2

Acids are the substance that is capable of donating H+ion to a basic substance. Since both of the compounds contain hydrogen atom and hence it can be released as H+ ion and they are acidic in nature.

H2C2O4  → HC2O4- + H+HC2O4-  C2O4- + H+

Step 3

Oxalic acid is a stronger acid than HC2O4-. It is very easy for oxalic acid to donate an H+ to a base when compared with HC2O4-, it can be explained by using the conjugated acid base concepts.

Oxalic acid loses an H+ ion to form HC2O4-, since HC2O4- is the conjugated base of the oxalic acid, HC2O4- has a greater tendency to accept an H+ ion.

     H2C2O4⇔ HC2O4- + H+

That is the chances of removal of H+ ion by an oxalic acid is greater than that of HC2O4- ion.
