Osmosis is the net movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from an area of lower solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration. This process is very important in many biological processes. Three terms hyperosmotic, hypoosmotic, and iso- osmotic solutions describes the relative osmolarities between solutions. For example, when comparing the two solution that have different osmolarities, the solutions with the higher osmolarity is considered to be hyperosmotic than the other, and the solution with lower osmolarity is considered to be hypoosmotic. If two solutions have the same osmolarity, they are said to be iso-osmotic.
