Question

If a wide-flanged beam fails in local buckling of the flange, will the top flange, the bottom flange, or both buckle? Explain.

Expert Solution
Step 1

When the beam section is subjected to large amount of stresses or loads, the thin sized members as the web and flanges buckle before the full strength of the member is reached. This occurs as a result of poor slenderness ratio of the element, which is the ratio of the width to the thickness. If the flanges of the beam buckles first due to local buckling, it is called as flange local buckling.
