Penetrometer is a device that is used to find the strength of soil or other materials. This is mainly used for geo-technical based experiments and investigations.The resistance of the soil to the vertical penetration can be observed by using a penetrometer. In the olden times, long rods, human fists or thumbs were used for this purpose and was not accurate.
