13C - NMR is analogous to proton NMR. This process does identification of carbon molecules in organic compounds same as proton NMR identifies hydrogen.

Tetramethylsilane (TMS) is used as reference in 13C NMR.

Each carbon atom show different chemical shift as it has different chemical environment. But when structure is symmetrical NMR signals reduce. crobon atoms having same chemical environment show one signal.
