The icosahedral symmetry in viruses are extremely common. The icosahedron consists of 20 triangular faces with 12 vertices. This symmetry allows the formation of a closed shell with the smallest number of identical subunits required are 60. The triangulation number is the number of facets present per triangular face of icosahedron. Each facet contains a capsid protein multimer. By combining several triangular facets, an assembly of larger face from same structural unit can be formed.
