Question
How can we find the location of the neutral axis?
Expert Solution
arrow_forward
Step 1
When a bending moment is applied on a beam, normal stresses are set up in its cross-section due to the bending of the beam. Due to bending (sagging or hogging), the beam's fibres undergo a change in length in such a way that if the upper fibre experiences elongation the bottommost fibre experiences compression and vice-versa. Thus, there is a fibre within the beam that doesn't show any change in length and thus doesn't show any strain. This fibre is said to lie on the neutral axis of the beam.
