Question

How can we calculate the Molar Solubility in the Presence of a Common Ion?

Expert Solution
Step 1

To find: How can we calculate the Molar Solubility in the Presence of a Common Ion.

Step 2

The molar solubility of any salt is defined as the concentration of salt that will dissolve in solution at equilibrium.

Since in the presence of any common ion, the reaction equilibrium of the solubility reaction will shift towards the reactant side.

Hence the molar solubility of the salt decreases in the presence of a common ion.

To illustrate how can we calculate the molar solubility of a salt in the presence of a common ion, let's understand the below example.

Example: In 0.0030 M ZnSO4 to calculate the molar solubility of Zn(OH)2.

Since in ZnSO4 solution, there will be ZnSO4 as well producing Zn2+ ions in the solution as ZnSO4 is completely soluble salt in water.

Hence there will be Zn2+ ions coming from ZnSO4 as well.
