1) All power during an hour of up to 5 kW is drawn from a baseload coal power
plant. Any power in excess of that amount is drawn from a peaker plant running as a
natural gas combined cycle power plant.
2) Localized solar energy production is provided in the table on the next page.
Energy demand by the house is first met by this solar generation. If the total hourly
energy demand is below 5 kW, then any extra energy required beyond that provided by
the solar panels is drawn from a coal power plant. If the total hourly demand is above 5
kW, then any extra hour demand beyond 5 kW is met by a natural gas combined cycle
power plant. No credit is given if the solar energy production exceeds the energy
demand.
3) Same as (2), but any excess energy generated by the solar panels can be
stored in batteries for use later in the day when solar is not available. The energy in the
batteries is depleted before resorting to pulling energy from the coal or gas plants (i.e.,
whenever the energy demand exceeds the solar energy production).

For coal generation, estimate the greenhouse gas emissions to be 1 kg/kWh.
For gas combined cycle generation, estimate the greenhouse gas emissions to be 0.4 kg/kWh.
