Question

Explain Tollens reagent ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

A number of reagents are used in organic analysis among them one of the important reagents is the Tollens reagent.

Step 2

The chemical formula of Tollens reagent is Ag(NH3)2OH hence it is known as an alkaline solution of ammoniacal silver nitrate. In organic chemistry Tollens reagents are used to identify the presence of an aliphatic or aromatic aldehyde. The reagent can be used to identify the presence of alpha-hydroxy ketone since they tautomerize to form aldehydes.
