Explain in detail acrosomal reaction and the role of calcium in this process
Fertilization is the fusion of gametes to give rise to new individual organism or offsprings.Other names of fertilization are insemination, pollination ,syngamy. At the time of fertilization,a sperm needs to fuse with plasma membrane first and then to female egg cell in order to fertilize it.
Sperms undergo through a process known as acrosome reaction.Acrosome reaction is the reaction which takes place in acrosome of sperm as it reaches the egg.Acrosome is the cap like structure present on the anterior half of head of sperm.
Process of acrosome reaction:
As the sperm reaches the zona pellucida of egg, membrane which surrounds the acrosome fuses with plasma membrane of head of sperm and this results in exposing of contents of acrosome.
Contents of acrosome are: Surface antigens and various enzymes
