Atom undergoes transition from one stationary state to another stationary state by absorption or emission of radiation. The radiation that are emitted or absorbed is electromagnetic radiations. If the transition takes place from lower energy state to a higher energy state, then it is done by absorption of photon. If the transition takes place from higher energy to lower energy state, then it takes place by emission of photon.
