E4-15 (Algo) Computing Activity Rates, Assigning Costs for a Service Industry [LO 4-3, 4-4, 4-5, 4-7]
The University of Dental Health (UDH) is a state-run university focusing on the education and training of dentists, dental assistants,
dental hygienists, and other dental professionals. The university provides both traditional undergraduate courses to 9,100 students and
continuing professional education (CPE) courses to 4,900 practicing professionals. UDH has just hired a new controller who wants to
utilize ABC. The controller has identified three key activities performed by the university and the cost of each of these activities:
• UDH has three buildings with a total of 140,000 square feet of classroom and facility space. Due to the large space
requirements for labs and other training facilities, the undergraduate program utilizes 126,000 square feet. Total cost,
$1,526,000.
• UDH offers career placement services for undergraduate students, career counseling for active professionals taking CPE
courses, and other student services to both groups. Total cost, $378,000.
• UDH offers 1,500 different instructional courses each year, 1,050 of which are undergraduate courses. Total cost, $3,300,000.
Required:
1. Compute an activity rate for each of the three activities identified by the controller.
2. Compute cost driver values and activity proportions for each group of students for each activity.
3. Determine the amount of costs assigned to each group of students and the cost per student to UDH to provide these three key
activities.

There is a single kitchen used to provide meals to both the nursing home and retirement home, meaning labor costs and utilities costs of the kitchen are shared by the two homes. There is also a centralized cleaning department that provides the cleaning services for both homes as well as the kitchen. The nursing home serves only indigent patients who are on Medicaid. The state Department of Health and Family Services (DHFS) reimburses NCI at Medicaid-approved cost reimbursement rates. The Medicaid reimbursement rates are based on cost information supplied by NCI. The relevant cost and allocation data for the most recent year appear in the following table. C formatso I know what you're doing Grand Haven is a senior living community that offers a full range of services including independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care. The assisted living division provides residential space, meals, and medical services (MS) to its residents. The current costing system adds the cost of all of these services (space, meals, and MS) and divides by total resident days to get a cost per resident day for each month. Recognizing that MS tends to vary significantly among the residents, Grand Haven's accountant recommended that an ABC system be designed to calculate more accurately the cost of MS provided to residents. She decided that residents should be classified into four categories (A, B, C, D) based on the level of services received, with group A representing the lowest level of service and D representing the highest level of service. Two cost drivers being considered for measuring MS costs are…arrow_forward
