Sannah Cookies and Bakery owns and operates seven bakeries shop in several location situated at Kedah. The company have done well and is planning to develop several business information systems including payroll, sales and inventories to increase the company’s performance and efficiency. Miss Sofea has been appointed to manage the new project development for the systems. After the system prioritization analysis has been conducted, Miss Sofea decided and approved by the management to start with the implementation of the payroll system.
Ahmed, the system analyst has completed the system design specification and architecture issues. Now, he is ready to address the implementation tasks. He needs to prepare the system testing schedule. Miss Sofea reminded him,
“Make sure you include a large number of error in the test data. You know users are bound to make mistakes. We need to design built-in safeguards that will catch the errors and either fix them automatically or alert the user to the errors.”
Ahmed also needs to prepare the systems documentation. As Ahmed is quite busy with the systems testing plan and Miss Sofea do not want any delay with the project schedule, she thought that the internship student, Linda, may help Ahmed. She urged,
“If you are quite occupied with the system testing plan, maybe you can ask Linda to help you with the system documentation.”
Ahmed felt relieved with the help from Linda on the system documentation. He asked Linda to include the overview of menu, methods of data input, and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) in the user manual.
The training, data conversion and system changeover also need to be planned to ensure that the new system can run smoothly in the actual environment.
REQUIRED:
- Discuss THREE (3) reasons of why it is essential for Ahmed to conduct a system testing.
- Prepare a testing plan for the system. (The system plan should include all the main testing and determine who should participate in the testing)
- Prepare SIX (6) questions and answers to be included in the FAQ for the payroll system’s user manual.
- Suggest the suitable system changeover for the payroll system and justify your answer.

- Jade Ltd is now considering how to obtain a computer software. The director of Jade Ltd has noticed that over the last 20 years, many companies have spent a great deal of money internally developing new intangible assets, such as software. You have been asked by the director to provide your advice on the accounting treatments of the two possibilities below: (i) Employ its own programmers to write software that the company will use (ii) Purchase computer software externally, including packages for payroll and general ledger. Required: In accordance with IAS 38 / AASB 138 Intangible Assets, discuss whether internally developed intangible assets should be recognised, and explain the differ in the accounting treatments for the two possible options. As CEO of Riverside Marine, Rachel Moore knows it is important to control costs and to respond quickly to changes in the highly competitive boat-building industry. When Gerbig Consulting proposes that Riverside Marine invest in an ERP system, she forms a team to evaluate the proposal: the plant engineer, the plant foreman, the systems specialist, the human resources director, the marketing director, and the management accountant. A month later, the management accountant Miles Cobalt reports that the team and Gerbig estimate that if Riverside Marine implements the ERP system, it will incur the following costs: Costs of the Project a.$390,000 in software costs b. $85,000 to customize the ERP software and load Riverside Marine'sdata into the new ERP system c. $112,000 for employee training Benefits of the Project a. More efficient order processing should lead to savings of $185,000. b. Streamlining the manufacturing process so that it maps into the ERP…Relco Industries recently purchased Arbeck, Inc., a manufacturer of electrical components that the construction industry uses. Roland Ford has been appointed as chief financial officer of Arbeck, and the president of Relco, Martha Sanderson, has asked him to prepare an organizational chart for his department at Arbeck. The chart that Ford has prepared is shown in the figure. Ford believes that the treasurer’s department should include the following employees: assistant treasurer, manager of accounts receivable and four subordinates, manager of investments and three subordinates, and manager of stockholder relations and two subordinates—a total of 13 employees besides the treasurer. The controller’s department should consist of an assistant controller, a manager of general accounting and four subordinates, a manager of fixed asset control and three subordinates, and a manager of cost accounting with four subordinates—a total of 15 employees besides the controller. When Ford presented his…
- Mary Tan is the controller for Duck Associates, a property management company in Portland, Oregon. Each year, Tan and payroll clerk Toby Stock meet with the external auditors about payroll accounting. This year, the auditors suggest that Tan consider outsourcing Duck Associates’ payroll accounting to a company specializing in payroll processing services. This would allow Tan and her staff to focus on their primary responsibility: accounting for the properties under management. At present, payroll requires 1.5 employee positions: payroll clerk Toby Stock and a bookkeeper who spends half her time entering payroll data in the system. Tan considers this suggestion, and she lists the following items relating to outsourcing payroll accounting: a. The current payroll software that was purchased for $4,000 three years ago would not be needed if payroll processing were outsourced. b. Duck Associates’ bookkeeper would spend half her time preparing the weekly payroll input form that is…PT. Alakishia has been operating in Jakarta for more than 10 years. Aries is one of the employees who is responsible for recording transactions in the purchasing department when ordering raw materials from suppliers. Once, Wilson as the party who made the payments and received the invoices, resigned from the office, so for the moment everything was in Aries' charge. Jenni as COO of PT. Alakitashia really trusts Aries because by seeing the contribution of Aries for a long time, it is also due to the close friendship between them, thus leaving the work entirely and the internal control to Aries itself. This has caused a lack of segregation of duties, so that since it was fully managed by Aries, the number of purchases has increased and it can be seen how the expenses are higher than before, so it is feared that fraud could occur. In addition, Aries has also collaborated with all suppliers and the production department to harmonize the transaction record in the form of the number of units…PT. - Meredith had an excellent management science course as part of her MBA program in college, so she realizes that break-even analysis is needed to help make this decision. With this in mind, she instructs several staff members to investigate this prospective product further, including developing estimates of the related costs and revenues as well as forecasting the potential sales. One month later, the preliminary estimates of the relevant financial figures come back. The cost of designing the grandfather clock and then setting up the production facilities to produce this product would be approximately $250,000. There would be only one production run for this limited-edition grandfather clock. The additional cost for each clock produced would be roughly $2,000. The marketing department estimates that their price for selling the clocks can be successfully set at about $4,500 apiece, but a firm forecast of how many clocks can be sold at this price has not yet been obtained. However, it is…Mary Tan is the controller for Duck Associates, a property management company in Portland, Oregon. Vince has worked for Shamrock for 12 years and has been involved in many systems development projects. Katy recently began working for Shamrock. She has 4 years of experience in systems development with another comparably sized organization. Yesterday, Vince and Katy met to determine their plan for approaching the conceptual system design. Following is an excerpt of some dialogue that occurred in that meeting.Katy: I really think that the new system can be designed more efficiently if we use an object-oriented design approach. Further, future enhancements and maintenance will be easier if we use an object approach.Vince: The method you are suggesting is a creation of modules. I do not have a problem with that concept in general. I just prefer using a top-down approach to design the system. We have been using that system for the past 12 years, and it has worked out…
- You stopped by the accounts payable department and retrieved a series of recently submitted invoices for various trade expenses related to the auditorium construction project. “One of the things you wanted to accomplish was to understand how the accounting codes worked—what was capitalized, what was expensed, how it was recorded, etc.” So, you grabbed a stack of processed invoices with accounting codes and went to the construction site to meet with the vice president for an hour-long interview. As the two of you walked around the grounds, you asked the vice president if he could explain the accounting codes to you: “He stared at the [top] invoice for approximately 30 seconds and said: ‘That is not my signature on the invoice!’ As he looked through the stack, he found what appeared to be about three or four other forgeries. He was completely baffled.” The initial investigation revealed that all the forgeries were in the painting division, budgeted at approximately $800,000 a year. Further, they will able to store these design on a network server where they and other architects may be able to call them back up for future designs with similar components. The consulting firm has been instructed to develop the system without disrupting the architects. In fact, the top management believes that the best route is to develop the system and then to “introduce” it to the architects during training session. Management does not want the architects to spend precious billable hours guessing about the new system of putting work off until the new system is working. Thus, the consultants are operating in a back room under a shroud of secrecy. a) Do you think that management is taking the best course of action for the announcement of the new system?
