excesses and deficiencies.
The cellular fraction of blood contains three types of cells also called the formed (living) elements; namely, Red Blood Cells (RBC), White Blood Cells (WBC), and the platelets. Hemopoietic Stem Cells (HSC) present in the red bone marrow differentiate to give rise to the formed elements. This process is called hematopoiesis.
White Blood Cells (WBC) or leucocytes are large, nucleated, and fewer in number than RBC. Their number varies from 6-10,000 cells/mm3 of blood. They are colorless and ameboid in shape. They are of two major types depending on the presence of certain granules found in their cytoplasm namely, granular leucocytes and agranular leucocytes. They are required to maintain the immune system of the body.
