Discuss four key evolution innovations in plants.
Evolution is the process by which an organism accumulates changes or adapts from an ancestral form to its current form. It helps the organism become better suited to the environment it inhabits. Evolution innovation refers to novel traits that have led to the formation of new taxonomic groups. Such novel traits are called key innovations or adaptive breakthroughs. The result is increased species diversity and colonization of new habitats.
A phenotype is a physically observable trait. Example: Height. A genotype refers to the genetic composition that is responsible for the phenotype.
The earliest plant forms were aquatic and later became terrestrial, called embryophytes. They adapted to the terrestrial existence by new phenotypic and genotypic traits. The evolution of plants was traced through molecular data and fossil records.
