The current in the coil induces a magnetic field. The
interaction of this field with that of the permanent magnet
forces the pan upward. The control unit increases the current
until the shield is high enough to block the light from the
LED. The control unit then determines the current required
to keep the pan at this fixed height. The measurement of this
current is used to determine the mass of the object.
