The thin membrane has specialized dense sheets, and consists of the extracellular matrix are called basement membranes (BMs). It is a thin fibrous matrix of tissues. The basement membrane separates the epithelium, mesothelium, and endothelium layers.
The single-layer, which is present below the epithelium, is called the basement membrane. It is an extracellular matrix that is thin and fibrous. There are two layers present in the basement membrane named basal lamina and the reticular lamina. The origin of the basement membrane is usually the epithelial tissues of the skin. It is also believed that the mesenchymal layer also contributes to the origin of the basement membrane but not examined.
The basement membrane's main function is to provide relay signals that help in the development of organs. It will also give substrate to the organs and help in differentiation or maintenance of the body tissues.
