Erving Goffman, in his theory of Dramaturgy, distinguished between how individuals interact in different social scenarios. He compared an individual's life to a play and suggested that the individuals are playing different parts in the play. We play different roles on the basis of the knowledge that we gain through socialization. We enact our roles before some audience who plays their role when the time comes.

Step 2

In Goffman's theory of 'Presentation of Self in Everyday Life', he uses the example of a theatre in order to explain the everyday interaction of individuals. Social life according to him is a performance which is carried out by the participants in three different stages. These are-

The Front Stage- Individuals perform on the front stage when they know that they are being watched by people. Here an individual uses his internalized value system and the socially accepted behavior pattern. Performance on the front stage is normally purposeful in nature. It follows a routinized social script that is shaped by cultural norms.
The Back Stage- When acting backstage, individuals are free of the expectations and the routine that is required in the front stage. People act in a more relaxed and comfortable manner backstage. They no longer need the elements that make them look desirable and they become their true selves. An individual's backstage life may involve his family or roommates but maintaining a high level of formality is not required in this stage.
The Off Stage- This is a place where the individuals no longer need to perform or follow their value system. They are completely their true selves and be guided by instincts.
