Cycle Time and Velocity, Manufacturing Cycle
Efficiency
A company like Kicker performs warranty repair work on speakers in a manufacturing cell.
The typical warranty repair involves taking the defective speaker apart, testing the components,
and replacing the defective components. The maximum capacity of the cell is 1,000 repairs per
month. There are 500 production hours available per month.
Required:
1. Compute the theoretical velocity (per hour) and the theoretical cycle time (minutes per
unit repaired).
2. Speaker repair uses 4 minutes of move time, 10 minutes of wait time, and 6 minutes of
inspection time. Calculate the MCE.
3. Using the information from Requirement 2, calculate the actual cycle time and the actual
velocity for speaker repair.

- Talbot Industries manufactures two models of wireless headset: TI-12 and TI-28. Each product requires time on a single machine. The machine has a monthly capacity of 540 hours. Total market demand for the two products is limited to 2,000 units of TI-12 and 1,000 units of TI-28 monthly. Talbot is currently producing and selling 1,500 TI-12 models and 780 TI-28 models each month. Cost and machine-usage data for the two products are shown in the following spreadsheet, which analysts at Talbot use for production planning purposes: Price Less variable costs per unit Material Labor Overhead Contribution margin per unit Fixed costs Manufacturing Marketing and administrative Machine hours per unit Machine hours used Machine hours available Quantity produced Maximum demand Profit TI-12 $ 80 Required A Required B 23 29 8 $ 20 0.1arrow_forwardOwearrow_forwardBest Ink produces printers for personal computers. The following information is available for production of a recent order of 500 printers. Process time 16.0 hours Inspection time 3.5 hours Move time 9.0 hours Wait time 21.5 hours 1. Compute the company’s manufacturing cycle time. 2. Compute the company’s manufacturing cycle efficiency. 3. Assume the company wishes to increase its manufacturing cycle efficiency to 0.80. If process time is unchanged, what is the maximum number of hours of non-value-added time the company can have and meet this goal?arrow_forward
