Step 1
Usually, the intestine produces gas and is transferred to the colon (large intestine) efficiently via the small intestine. The quantity of gas present usually depends on the impact of colonic bacteria on the undigested food touching the colon and the rate at which the gas travels through and travels via the intestines. Almost all of the lower intestinal gas that is transmitted by flatus is formed in the colon and is not spread from the upper intestines in healthy people.

- SCENARIO A 22-year-old man who was a known heroin abuser was admitted to an emergence department comatose, with shallow respirations. Routine laboratory studies and chest x-ray studies were done after the patient was aroused. He was then transferred to the ICU. He complained of left-sided chest pain. Examination of the chest film showed three fractured ribs on the right and a large right pleural effusion. Further questioning of a friend revealed that he had fallen and struck the corner of a table after injecting heroin. The diagnosis was traumatic hemothorax secondary to rib fractures and a chest tube was inserted into the right pleural space. No blood could be obtained despite maneuvering of the tube. Another chest x-ray showed that the tube was correctly placed in the right pleural space, but the fractured ribs and the pleural effusion were on the left. The radiologist then realized that he had reversed the first film. A second tube was inserted into the left pleural space, and…arrow_forwardA two-month-old boy was brought to the hospital because he vomited a large quantity of dark red material. Previously well, a few days earlier he had abruptly interrupted a crying episode and then appeared to have difficulty breathing. There were no recognized illnesses and no history of trauma or abuse. He was bottle-fed. Both parents smoked in the home, which was located in an area of the city characterized by substandard housing in poor repair. Three weeks before admission, their house became flooded during a storm. Cleanup had not yet been accomplished. On examination, the baby was well developed and nourished, and there was no evidence of trauma or infection. His breathing was labored. His white blood count was within normal limits, but he was moderately anemic. His blood clotted normally, but his blood oxygen was low. His chest X-ray showed patchy shadows consistent with fluid in the alveoli. - Our pharmacy is located near several pediatricians’ offices, and each of these pediatricians has a preferred mouth rinse for sore throat. One doctor writes a combination of lidocaine, antacid, and Benadryl for a sore throat. Depending on the cause of the sore throat, she may add nystatin, an antifungal medication, or acyclovir, an antiviral medication. A typical prescription will read: antacid 1 part, lidocaine 2 parts, Benadryl 1 part, and nystatin 4 parts; dispense 8 ounces. We have found one of the simplest ways to calculate the amount of each drug to mix is by using fractions. First we add up the total number of “parts,” and this becomes our denominator or bottom number. For this compound, the denominator is 1 + 2 + 1 + 4 = 8. The numerator or top number is how many parts of that ingredient are used. For example, two parts of the mixture are lidocaine, so lidocaine is 2/8 of the mixture. To calculate how many ounces of lidocaine are needed, the fraction is multiplied by the total…arrow_forwardSelect the four things that are required by the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard ventilation at 10 exchanges per hour latex or nitrile gloves impervious covers over exposed skin goggles or face shield MSDS sheets changing room to remove HCHO contaminated garmentsarrow_forwardDiscuss and explain why these below hazards are the most important Presence of listeria/ Salmonella Presence of pathogenic microorganisms Pathogenic and spoilage organism in raw milk Presence of E.coli Cross contamination Presence of allergensarrow_forward
