Citric acid and sodium bicarbonate react to
produce water, carbon dioxide, and
Na3C6H507.
(Remember to balance it)
1. What's the net ionic equation?
2. What's the volume of carbon dioxide
produced if you had 1.00 grams of the citric
acid and 1.19 grams of NahCO3?
3. What's the limiting reactant?
4. If the student actually had 0.4 of CO2,
what is the percent yield?

Step 1

The net ionic equation shows only the species that are involved in the chemical reaction, i.e., the ones that are actually consumed or produced. In this case, the complete ionic equation is:

C6H8O7 + 3NaHCO3 → Na3C6H5O7 + 3CO2 + 3H2O + 3Na+

However, the sodium ion (Na+) is present on both sides of the equation, so it is a spectator ion and does not participate in the reaction. Therefore, we can write the net ionic equation as:

C6H8O7 + 3HCO3- → C6H5O73- + 3CO2 + 3H2O

where HCO3- is the bicarbonate ion and C6H5O7-3 is the citrate ion.
