Question

You have a semi permeable membrane with a membrane potential of -70mV. You also have two ions that are both permeable to the membrane, Na and Cl. Na has a concentration of 500mM inside the membrane and 31mM outside the membrane. Cl has a concentration of 100mM inside the membrane and 540mM outside the membrane. Use the nernst equation to calculate the electrochemical equilibrium of both ions, and show in which direction the netflux would be for each ion.

Expert Solution
Step 1

According  to the question we have,

The membrane potential V= –70 mV

The concentration of the ionic specie (Na) in the extracellular [ Xout ]= 31mM

The concentration of the ionic specie (Na) in the intracellular fluid [Xin ] = 500 mM

The concentration of the ionic specie (Cl) in the extracellular fluid [ Xout ] = 540 mM

The concentration of the ionic specie (Cl) in the intracellular [ Xin ] = 100 mM

Now, we have to calculate the electrochemical equilibrium of both ions and also we have to show in which direction the Netflux would be for each ion.
