- It has been suggested that it would make the study of human diseases easier if cloned transgenic animals were produced that carried faulty versions of human genes (e.g., the gene that causes cystic fibrosis). a. Why would such animals be useful in medical research? : b. What ethical questions are raised by the creation of such transgenic animals?a) Use the internet to identify current uses of genetic engineering. Explain three different applications: what it is, how it works and its benefits.Below are some of the arguments about the use of transgenic organisms. From your own perspective, explain your answer in the questions in not more than 5 sentences. 1. If you are a farmer would you take the chance of growing crops that are pest resistant? Why or why not? 2. Considering the knowledge gained in genetic engineering, would you try to patronize GMO fruits and vegetables? Why or why not? 3. Is creating or altering genes of an organism a form of Blasphemy to the creator (God)? Why? 4. Is genetic engineering morally permissible or not?
- Forward Genetics Analysis uses a variety of beneficial approaches to identify never before described genes. For each of the following approaches or outcomes, briefly (maximum 2 sentences) discuss in your own words, their purpose in Forward Genetics Analysis. c) Mendelian ratios d) Genetic screenPick one (1) of the five (5) principles developed by the Ethics Committee for the Human Genome Organization that must be considered when the global community is confronted by new technology. Why do you feel that principle is MOST important.1. a) If you were at risk of a fatal disease such as Huntington’s disease and only the 95% accurate preliminary genetic test was available, would you take the test? After all, 95% of the time the test would tell you whether you would eventually get Huntington’s disease or whether you did not have to worry about getting this disease. b) The linkage distance between the DNA sequence used in the test and the actual Huntington’ disease locus was 5%. In a large sample of the Venezuelan family, what percentage of people would inherit the DNA sequence but not the Huntington’s allele (i.e. be a false positive test for Huntington’s)? What percentage of that large Venezuelan family would not inherit the DNA sequence but would inherit the Huntington’s allele (i.e., be a false negative test for Huntington’s)?
- I believe that there are many good things that can come out of people getting to design their baby’s genetic material. But there are also many bad things as well. From the article by Bio medical about the pros and cons of having a designer baby it states that a pro is that this type of engineering can “ might help prevent genetic diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s Disease, down syndrome, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and many others”. I think that it is great that we could get rid of Alzheimer’s due to how destructive it can be to the people that suffer it. But I think the other diseases that it can eliminate is horrible due to them making our world a more unique place such as people with autism, Down syndrome. By doing this it could eliminate the whole population of people with disabilities community and make everyone “normal”. Another bad that I found in the article Ethics of designer babies which states that a major flaw for these babies is “designer baby technologies suggest…Explain why large sized slow breeding organisms are not suitable for genetic engineering .There are many applications of cloning technology. List the applications that you think are most acceptable and those that are least acceptable. Explain your reasoning.
- Some critics have warned that the use of gene therapy to correct genetic disorders will affect the course of human evolution. Evaluate this criticism in light of what you know about population genetics and evolution, distinguishing between somatic gene therapy and germ-line gene therapy.Give typing answer with explanation and conclusion If you want to identify genes linked to autism in a mouse model, which genetic approach or approaches could you use? (Mark all that apply) A) Reverse Genetics B) Forward Genetics C) Optogenetics D) Population GeneticsA PI in your facility has finished working with his transgenic line of mice and would like you to cryopreserve embryos (freeze them in liquid nitrogen) so that he can keep them for later experimentation without paying the extra cost of a breeding colony. Which of the following steps do you take? Select all that apply: a) Use the van der Lee/Boot and Whitten effect to time mate your females. b) Superovulate your females by injecting with PMSG and hCG. c) Breed the mice with a vasectomized male. d) Collect ova from the ampulla the day you find a plug. e) Collect blastocysts from the uterus 3 days after finding a plug.
