Question
#4

Transcribed Image Text:There is some concern that if a woman has an epidural to reduce pain during childbirth,
the drug can get into the baby's bloodstream, making the baby sleepier and less willing
to breastfeed. In December 2006, the International Breastfeeding Journal published
results of a study conducted at Sydney University. Researchers followed up on 1,178
singleton births, noting whether the mother had an epidural and whether she was still
breastfeeding her baby at six months. The results of the study are summarized in the
table below. Here, 396 mothers received an epidural, and 704 were breastfeeding at six
months.

Transcribed Image Text:a. We select a mother at random from this sample of 1,178 mothers. What is the
probability that the mother was breastfeeding at six months given that she had an
epidural?
b. Are having an epidural and breastfeeding at six months independent for this sample of
mothers? Explain, using probability rules to justify your answer.

Step 1: Given Information:
It is given that the data in the two-way table form.
Total sample mothers = 1178
Epidural mothers = 396
Breastfeeding mothers = 704
