(a) Make a graph of this data. Be sure to make a high quality, easy-to-plot, easy-to-read graph. Attach the graph to this prelab assignment. (b) Linearly extrapolate to the time of mixing and determine AT. (c) Calculate qr and AH, for the reaction. Give energy units in kilojoules. Assume 52.0 g of solution are present and that the heat capacity the calorimeter, Ccal, is that calculated in question 1 above.
Thermochemistry
Thermochemistry can be considered as a branch of thermodynamics that deals with the connections between warmth, work, and various types of energy, formed because of different synthetic and actual cycles. Thermochemistry describes the energy changes that occur as a result of reactions or chemical changes in a substance.
Exergonic Reaction
The term exergonic is derived from the Greek word in which ‘ergon’ means work and exergonic means ‘work outside’. Exergonic reactions releases work energy. Exergonic reactions are different from exothermic reactions, the one that releases only heat energy during the course of the reaction. So, exothermic reaction is one type of exergonic reaction. Exergonic reaction releases work energy in different forms like heat, light or sound. For example, a glow stick releases light making that an exergonic reaction and not an exothermic reaction since no heat is released. Even endothermic reactions at very high temperature are exergonic.
Given:
mh = Mass of Hot water = 50.0 g
mc= Mass of Cold water = 50.0 g
Temperature of Hot water = Th = 48.4 °C
Temperature of Cold water = Tc = 23.8 °C
Result temperature = T = 35.7 °C
Specific Heat capacity of water = Cw= 4.184 J/g°C
Heat capacity of calorimeter = C
Heat absorbed by cold water + heat absorbed by calorimeter = Heat released by hot water
[mc * Cw * (T − Tc)]+ [C(T − Tc)] =− [mh * Cw * ( T − Th )]
---> [50 g * 4.184 J/g°C* (35.7 − 23.8)°C]+ [C(35.7 − 23.8)°C] =− [50 g * 4.184 J/g°C* ( 35.7 − 48.4)°C]2489.48 + 11.9C =2656.84C = 14.06 J/°C
